How is anodized aluminum engraved?

Laser engraving on anodized aluminum

Laser engraving on anodized aluminum is a process well known for its ability to remove the anodizing layer from the aluminum part. The result is a strong contrast between the mark generated by the laser and the surface’s color.

Characteristics of laser marking:

  • Fast
  • Efficient
  • Very precise
  • Works in harsh environments
  • Can maintain material properties
  • Strong contrast with anodization color

Rotary engraving on anodized aluminum

With a rotary engraving machine, the material is removed using cutting or scratching tools, engraving cutters of various sizes and shapes or diamond tips. Therefore, the colored layer is removed to make the rough aluminum appear.

Characteristics of rotary engraving:

  • Deep
  • Precise
  • Esthetic engraving
  • Various finishes
  • Cost-effective

Because rotary engravers use cutter tool tips, it is possible to change the engraving finish simply by changing the tool tip. All come with different characteristics; such as blade angle, cutter shape, number of lips, etc.

FAQ: The 6 questions most frequently asked of our experts

🔽 Should I choose laser marking or deep mechanical engraving for anodized aluminum traceability?

It depends on the part's lifecycle. Laser is ideal when speed, fine detail, high contrast and machine-readable codes are priorities. If identification must remain readable after severe abrasion, machining or surface wear, deeper mechanical marking may be preferable. For critical components, define the required marking depth and resistance before choosing between laser, dot peen or rotary engraving.

🔽 When is rotary a good choice for anodized aluminum engraving?

Rotary engraving is ideal for nameplates, control panels, tags and industrial identification plates, especially when controlled depth or color filling is required. Milling extends these capabilities by allowing cut-outs, openings and shaped features to be machined directly into the panel. Machines such as the Gravotech ISx000 are therefore particularly suitable for producing complete anodized aluminum front panels.

🔽 What laser settings should I use for anodized aluminum engraving?

There is no universal setting: speed, power, frequency and focus depend on the anodizing, color, required contrast and laser source. Start with moderate energy and increase it gradually until the desired contrast is obtained without unnecessarily damaging the underlying aluminum. A parameter test matrix is particularly useful when qualifying a new batch or part.

🔽 Does the thickness or quality of the anodized layer affect laser marking?

Yes. Anodizing thickness, dye, sealing and surface finish can influence contrast and the amount of energy required. Two visually similar batches may therefore need slightly different settings. For production work, it is recommended to validate the laser parameters on representative samples and save dedicated settings for each part reference or supplier batch.

🔽 Can anodized aluminum be marked without removing the anodized layer?

Depending on the required result and laser source, the anodized surface can sometimes be modified rather than completely stripped away. A MOPA laser provides greater control over pulse characteristics and can be useful when optimizing surface interaction and contrast. However, the process should be validated if maintaining the protective anodized layer in the marked area is a critical specification.

🔽 Can I mark Data Matrix codes and very small characters on anodized aluminum?

Yes. The achievable high contrast on anodized aluminum makes it particularly suitable for serial numbers, Data Matrix codes and small characters. A Fiber or MOPA laser combined with precise focusing can produce very fine details. For industrial traceability, always validate code readability with the actual scanner and at the smallest marking size required in production.
